Today, private prison profiteers, GEO Group, opened a new prison in Newark’s toxic chemical corridor in a major expansion of the campaign of terror against immigrants in New Jersey. North New Jersey Democratic Socialists of America (NNJDSA) vows to fight the expansion of the draconian immigrant detention system in Newark.

New Jerseyans have demonstrated repeatedly that we value our immigrant neighbors and that we refuse to participate in their imprisonment. NNJDSA has played a leading role in the movement against immigrant detention in the state, which led to New Jersey signing a bill into law in 2021 to forbid the continuation of immigrant detention. Unfortunately, both the Biden and Trump administrations collaborated with the odious private prison corporations CoreCivic and GEO Group to circumvent the will of New Jerseyans. 

NNJDSA refuses to allow immigrants to be the scapegoats for the failures that stem from our capitalist system and its two subservient political parties. We vow to continue public action against Delaney Hall, Elizabeth Detention Center, and any other efforts to maintain or expand immigrant detention in the state. Whether it is the illegal efforts to expel Palestinian student leader Mahmoud Khalil, the cowardly abductions of immigrants by brutally lawless ICE gangs, or the growth of the immigrant prison-to-deportation pipeline, NNJDSA remains steadfastly unafraid of the fascists and committed to defending our communities.

For people of conscience in New Jersey who wish to fight this fascist crackdown, join us! We need a broad movement to fight against the demonization of immigrants, the suppression of protest, and the rising brutalization of citizens and non-citizens alike. 

Abolish ICE, Free Palestine, and Abolish Prisons!
